What is exercise physiology?

Exercise, prescribed with precision.

Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are university-qualified allied health professionals who specialise in clinical exercise prescription for people with injuries, chronic conditions and disability. Where a personal trainer focuses on general fitness, an exercise physiologist designs precise, evidence-based programs to manage complex health needs safely.

At Aevum, exercise physiology works hand-in-hand with physiotherapy — physiotherapy resolves the immediate problem, exercise physiology builds the long-term capacity that keeps it from coming back.

Who we help

From chronic disease to elite performance.

Clinically prescribed exercise has strong evidence across a wide range of conditions. We commonly work with people managing:

  • Neurological conditions — MS, Parkinson's, stroke, cerebral palsy
  • Chronic disease — diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis
  • Persistent pain and musculoskeletal injury
  • Cancer recovery and rehabilitation
  • Mental health and wellbeing
  • NDIS goals for strength, mobility and function

We use specialised equipment including the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill and Game Ready recovery technology to deliver results that wouldn't be possible with standard gym equipment alone.

Exercise physiology and the NDIS

Building capacity that lasts.

As a registered NDIS provider, our exercise physiology services are typically funded under Improved Daily Living and Improved Health and Wellbeing. We design programs around your specific goals — and because we're multidisciplinary, your exercise physiologist works alongside your physiotherapist and occupational therapist for a truly coordinated approach.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions.

What does an exercise physiologist do?

An exercise physiologist designs and supervises exercise programs tailored to your health condition, injury or fitness goal. At Aevum, our EPs work with NDIS participants, chronic disease patients, post-surgical recovery and sports performance clients across the Sutherland Shire.

Is exercise physiology covered by NDIS?

Yes. Exercise physiology is a registered NDIS support. If exercise physiology is included in your plan, we can provide services under your NDIS funding at both our Kirrawee and Helensburgh clinics.

What is the difference between a physiotherapist and an exercise physiologist?

Physiotherapists primarily treat injuries and pain through hands-on techniques and rehabilitation. Exercise physiologists focus on using exercise as medicine — designing structured programs for chronic conditions, disability, weight management and long-term health. At Aevum, both work together.

Do I need a referral for exercise physiology?

No referral is needed for private appointments. For Medicare-funded sessions under a Chronic Disease Management plan, you will need a GP referral. NDIS participants need exercise physiology listed in their plan.
