A specific program designed by an exercise physiologist can be an effective, valuable option for people with autism, supporting physical health, motor skills, and in many cases broader wellbeing. Here's why exercise deserves consideration as part of an NDIS support plan.
Why exercise can be valuable for people with autism
Regular physical activity supports general health for everyone, and for many people with autism, structured exercise can also support motor skill development, sensory regulation, routine and predictability (which many autistic individuals find valuable), and opportunities for movement in a way that's tailored to individual sensory preferences and needs.
Common considerations in program design
An experienced exercise physiologist considers sensory sensitivities that may affect exercise environment or equipment choices, the value of predictable routine and clear, consistent instruction, individual interests and motivations (exercise built around genuine interest tends to be far more sustainable), and any co-occurring physical considerations relevant to the individual.
Potential benefits of a tailored exercise program
- Physical health — cardiovascular fitness, strength and general health benefits available to everyone
- Motor skill development — targeted work on coordination and movement skills where relevant
- Routine and structure — a regular, predictable exercise routine can be genuinely valuable for many autistic individuals
- Sensory regulation — certain types of physical activity can support sensory regulation for some people
- Confidence and independence — building physical capability can support broader independence and self-confidence
An individualised approach is essential
There's no single "autism exercise program" — what works well depends entirely on the individual's specific needs, sensory profile, interests and goals. A generic program is far less likely to succeed than one built around the individual.
Accessing exercise physiology through the NDIS
Exercise physiology is a recognised NDIS support, and for many participants, a tailored program can be included in their plan to support health and development goals.
