The Difference Between Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy

By Aaron Babb · 1 May 2023

Physiotherapy and occupational therapy are often used interchangeably, and while there's overlap in the conditions both professions treat, there are key differences in their focus and approach. Understanding these differences helps you access the right support for your needs.

What physiotherapy focuses on

Physiotherapy centres on restoring and optimising movement and physical function — treating pain, improving strength and mobility, and rehabilitating injuries. A physiotherapist might help you recover from a sports injury, rebuild strength after surgery, or manage a chronic condition affecting movement.

What occupational therapy focuses on

Occupational therapy centres on enabling people to participate in the activities ("occupations") that matter to them in daily life — from self-care and work to leisure activities. An occupational therapist looks holistically at how a condition affects your ability to do the things you need and want to do, and finds solutions, which might include adapting the task, the environment, or building specific skills.

Where they overlap

Both professions often work with similar conditions — stroke, neurological conditions, and injury recovery — but approach them from different angles. A physiotherapist working with a stroke survivor might focus on rebuilding walking ability, while an occupational therapist focuses on regaining independence with dressing, cooking or returning to work.

When might you need each?

You might see a physiotherapist primarily for pain, an acute injury, sports performance, or rebuilding physical strength and mobility. You might see an occupational therapist primarily for support with daily living tasks, home or workplace modifications, sensory or cognitive challenges affecting function, and adaptive equipment needs.

Why many people benefit from both

For many conditions — particularly neurological conditions, disability, and complex injury recovery — physiotherapy and occupational therapy work best together, addressing both the physical capacity to move and the practical ability to apply that movement to daily life.
