Motor Neurone Disease (MND) presents unique and evolving challenges, but specialised equipment alongside an exercise therapy program guided by our physiotherapy and exercise physiology team can meaningfully support quality of life — and much of this is available under the NDIS.
Understanding physiotherapy's role in MND
MND is progressive, meaning physiotherapy goals shift over time — from maintaining strength and function in earlier stages, to comfort, positioning and quality of life as the condition advances. Physiotherapy can't alter the disease's progression, but it plays a genuinely meaningful role at every stage.
How physiotherapy helps at different stages
- Early stage — maintaining strength and mobility for as long as possible, managing fatigue, and building an exercise routine appropriate to changing capacity
- Middle stage — equipment prescription (mobility aids, supportive seating), strategies to conserve energy for meaningful activities, and continued adaptation of exercise to current ability
- Later stage — positioning to maintain comfort, managing stiffness, breathing support strategies as respiratory muscles are affected, and education and support for family carers
The value of exercise physiology alongside physiotherapy
An individually tailored exercise program — adapted continually as the condition progresses — can help maintain function and may support quality of life for longer than inactivity would allow. This needs to be carefully balanced against fatigue and the progressive nature of the condition, which is where experienced guidance matters.
Equipment and technology
As mobility needs change, timely access to the right mobility aids and equipment makes a significant difference to independence and safety, and to reducing strain on family carers.
Support under the NDIS
MND typically qualifies for NDIS support given its progressive, significant impact on function, and many people are able to access support relatively quickly through provisions for rapidly progressing conditions.
If you or a family member has been diagnosed with MND, our team can help build a physiotherapy and exercise plan tailored to your current needs and adapted as they change. Contact us to discuss how we can support you.
