Most running injuries are load problems. But how you run determines where that load goes — and for runners with a recurring injury that keeps returning despite sensible training, how you move is often the missing piece.
3D running gait analysis measures it rather than guessing at it.
What "3D" actually means
Filming a runner on a phone from the side gives you one viewpoint in two dimensions. It's better than nothing, but it makes rotation nearly impossible to judge, hides movement happening toward or away from the camera, and produces impressions rather than measurements.
A 3D system captures movement in multiple planes simultaneously, producing actual numbers: joint angles at the hip, knee and ankle through the stride cycle, timings, and side-to-side differences measured rather than eyeballed.
That matters because several of the mechanical factors most associated with running injury — hip control during stance, stride width, pelvic movement — are precisely the ones a single side-on camera angle shows poorly.
What gets measured
A comprehensive assessment typically captures:
- Cadence — steps per minute, one of the most modifiable variables in running mechanics
- Stride length and stride width — including whether your foot crosses toward the midline
- Foot strike pattern — where and how the foot contacts the ground
- Joint angles — hip, knee and ankle positions through the stride cycle
- Ground contact time — how long each foot spends on the ground
- Asymmetries — meaningful differences between left and right, which often persist long after an old injury has resolved
What happens in an assessment
An analysis isn't just the filming. A useful assessment combines the data with clinical context:
- History — your running background, current training, injury history and goals
- Physical assessment — strength, mobility and control, which give the movement data meaning
- Running capture — running on the treadmill while the system records
- Review — going through the findings with you, seeing your own movement and understanding what the numbers show
- Plan — specific changes, exercises and, where relevant, footwear guidance
The fourth step is more valuable than it sounds. Most runners have never seen how they actually move, and understanding it makes the recommended changes far easier to apply.
Who benefits most
Gait analysis is genuinely useful for:
- Runners with a recurring injury — particularly one that returns each time training volume builds
- Runners increasing volume — moving up to half or full marathon distance, where small inefficiencies compound
- Runners returning after a long break or significant injury — where old compensations often persist
- Runners chasing efficiency — where mechanics affect economy and pace
- Anyone who's been told to "fix their running form" — without being told which part
It's less essential for a runner with no injury history, stable training and no performance goals — though many still find the baseline valuable.
What changes afterwards
The most common outcomes are a modest cadence increase, adjustments to stride width, targeted strengthening for a specific control deficit identified in the data, and footwear guidance. Changes are introduced gradually — altering several things at once tends to create new problems rather than solve existing ones.
Where relevant, findings feed into a broader plan alongside VO2 max testing for training zones, or an AlterG-supported return-to-running program after injury.
