Cerebral palsy is a lifelong condition, and as those living with it move into adulthood and older age, they can face unique challenges that differ from those experienced in childhood. Understanding these challenges helps in planning for a fulfilling life at every stage.
Cerebral palsy across the lifespan
CP results from injury to the developing brain and primarily affects movement and posture. While often diagnosed in early childhood, it's a condition that people live with for their entire lives — and the body's needs and challenges can shift significantly with age.
Common challenges with aging and CP
- Early onset of musculoskeletal changes — joint pain, muscle tightness and reduced mobility can develop earlier than in the general population, due to decades of atypical movement patterns
- Fatigue — many adults with CP report increasing fatigue with age, as movement that was already effortful becomes more so
- Reduced mobility over time — some people experience a gradual decline in walking ability or endurance, sometimes described as "early aging" of the musculoskeletal system
- Pain management — chronic pain becomes more common and often needs a proactive, ongoing management approach
- Access to appropriate care — many services are designed around childhood CP, making it harder to find providers experienced with adult and aging CP needs
How physiotherapy supports healthy aging with CP
A proactive, ongoing physiotherapy relationship — rather than treatment only when problems arise — helps manage the physical changes that come with aging and CP. This can include regular strength and flexibility maintenance, pain management strategies, mobility aids and equipment reviewed as needs change, and exercise programs adapted to changing energy levels and physical capacity.
The NDIS and ongoing support
For many adults with CP, the NDIS provides funding for the ongoing therapy, equipment and supports that make healthy, independent aging possible. Navigating funding alongside changing physical needs is something our team can help with.
If you or a family member is navigating the challenges of aging with cerebral palsy, our team has deep experience supporting adults with CP through every life stage. Contact us to discuss how we can help.
