Metabolic Testing for Cyclists: Finding Your VO2max and Zone 2

By Aaron Babb · 21 February 2023

How can a cyclist use metabolic testing to find their VO2max and Zone 2? This is one of the most common questions we hear from serious cyclists looking to train more effectively — and the answer lies in understanding exactly how your body uses energy at different intensities.

What is metabolic testing?

Metabolic testing measures how your body uses oxygen and produces energy during exercise, typically through a graded test on a bike or treadmill while breathing through a mask that analyses oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production. This data reveals your VO2max (the maximum rate your body can use oxygen) and your specific training zones.

Why VO2max matters

VO2max is one of the most reliable markers of aerobic fitness — the higher it is, the greater your capacity for sustained, high-intensity effort. While genetics play a role, VO2max can be meaningfully improved through targeted training, and tracking it over time shows whether your training is working.

Understanding Zone 2

Zone 2 is a moderate, sustainable intensity where the body predominantly burns fat for fuel and builds the aerobic base that underpins all higher-intensity performance. Many cyclists guess at their zones using generic heart rate formulas, but these can be significantly inaccurate — metabolic testing pinpoints your actual zones based on your physiology, not a generic estimate.

Building a training plan around your data

Once you know your VO2max and precise training zones, training becomes far more targeted. Rather than guessing whether a ride was "hard enough" or "too hard," you can train at exactly the intensity needed to achieve a specific adaptation — building your aerobic base in Zone 2, or pushing VO2max development at higher intensities.

Retesting to track progress

As fitness improves, your zones shift. Retesting every 8–12 weeks during a structured training block ensures your training zones stay accurate and your program continues to challenge you appropriately as you improve.

Who should consider metabolic testing?

Serious cyclists training with specific performance goals, triathletes balancing multiple disciplines, and anyone who wants training decisions based on real physiological data rather than guesswork will benefit from metabolic testing.
